CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I’ll admit that I creep along pretty slowly as I make my way forward. Ahead of me the cave is dark, though it begins to flicker with torchlight the deeper I get. Frankly, a whole lot of thoughts are passing through my mind.

It’s possible that I was thrown to the end of the dungeon and just killed the final boss, but I doubt it. It was too easy a fight. I really see two options as being the most likely. Either A: the bone golem was a mini-boss—maybe secret, maybe not—and I just defeated it, or B: the whole thing was a trap, something intentional that the cultists do to everyone, and now I’m going to be progressing through the dungeon as normal. I honestly don’t know which is right, and that worries me.

In any case, the tunnel isn’t long, and I soon come to a small doorway. This, thankfully, is where I get the answer to at least one of my questions.

The doorway is backward.

What I mean is that I come to a smooth stone surface, which has a door carved in it. The only issue is that there’s no doorknob. No handle. No hole. No way of opening it at all.

[ShadowDancer: Ooh! I bet this is a hidden door! On the other side there will be a bookshelf or something, and you can only open it by pulling the right book!]

[IceQueen: That would be cool to see! If only John was here. He could smash right through it.]

[FireStorm: Hey, don’t be knocking on Jason! He’s getting a whole lot stronger. With John always running off, Jason will be way stronger than him soon enough!]

I chuckle at the last one. Still, the conversation gives me an idea. I open up my pocket dimension and call forth Bjorn and Blub.

“Alright, you two.” I hold out my hand, and Blub floats down to land in it, where he slowly begins to inflate. “Have you ever done any work in the locksmithing business?”

They both stare at me blankly, not even saying a word in my mind. I flash a smile, then nod to Bjorn.

“Freeze it.”

Bjorn turns and growls, and frost begins to spread across the stone surface. There’s no layer of ice that appears, which is good. I need as much of the blast as possible to hit the stone and not be absorbed by something else. As the frost spreads across the ground, I take a step back but feel a chill in the air anyway. As Bjorn finishes, I flex my wrist.

“Alright, Blub. Here we go!”

With all my strength, I throw Blub at the doorway.

KA-BOOM!

The blast fills the air with smoke and fire, and little bits and pieces of stone rain down all around. As the debris slowly clears away, I find that my goal has been perfectly achieved. The doorway has been utterly and completely demolished, along with a good bit of the wall around it as well. Blub bounces back into the pocket dimension, though Bjorn stays at my side as I slowly step through the hole.
